Happy Belated Valentine's Day

We're a bit late with our February newsletter, so we hope you're doing well and  had a nice Valentine's Day. And how about that Punxsutawney Phil? He appears to have been spot-on with his prediction, because winter does seem to have decided to stick around a few weeks more than we might have expected.

Fernando

The most asked-for person at Spark is Fernando Calixto (seen here with a recent generous donation of several wheelchairs). He has the keys to the Mobility Kingdom, and he loves connecting people with the equipment they need. Fernando has been with Spark for several years. He not only repairs, but also cleans and manages all the mobility equipment, and takes care of the Spark building as well. As an example of how Fernando manages our building, an HVAC unit in one of our rooms requires repair; he will find a part to get it running. If he can repair something rather than buy a replacement, that is his plan. In doing so, he saves Spark an incalculable amount of money. Further, he does all of this with good humor. When asked how we measure our success, our answer is easy: Fernando is responsible for 90% of Spark’s mobility equipment loans, and rarely, if ever, is there a complaint. Our clients know exactly what they are getting. Caseworkers are among our biggest customers, and they have become confident and appreciative that the donation we ask is appropriate for the mobility equipment item we provide.

You can support this program with a financial gift to Spark or the gift of a piece of equipment.

Swing update & conclusion

You might recall the previous story about the swing that Spark modified for a child with special needs. After making some final refinements and adjustments, we (Spark innovator Brian and innovators & Spark volunteers Alan and Roshani) delivered it to the delight of the child and family. Just another reason we at Spark enjoy what we do.

Obtaining state and local government funding has always been difficult, and, at best, falls short of what Spark requires to provide our services. Therefore, Spark receives support solely through contributions from foundations, individuals, and businesses, many of which are local. Support from the larger local community, and from the community who receives our services, has enabled us to build strong relationships. We have, in a sense, become a family, and as such, we lean on each other in times of need. We often meet people in very stressful times; we care about them deeply, and their time at Spark is gentle and kind.

By the way, Spark currently has many hospital beds in our inventory.  We would love to find homes for them, so please reach out to friends, neighbors, acquaintances, co-workers, etc. and spread the word. Spark provides hospital beds for a very modest donation, and they can be kept as long as needed. Renting or buying a hospital bed is quite costly, and insurance may cover little or none of the cost.
